Material I
Material I was the main exhibition of Design Festival 2019 (Disainiöö), themed "Future Materials." Curated by Stuudio Aine, it brought together new materials developed by scientists, enterprises, designers, and architects from Estonia, Holland, and Hungary — exploring how environmental crisis is reshaping the notion of resources, and how waste, heritage technologies, biotechnology, and nanoscale materials might define the future of making.
Andrea Tamm designed the exhibition space, building a modular display system from basic hardware store materials — plywood sheets, concrete blocks, threaded bars, nuts and bolts. The system kept the budget low, could be extended or reconfigured as needed, and dismantled into components that required minimal storage and transport space. The exhibition subsequently travelled to the Estonian Academy of Arts.
